ARTIST STATEMENT

  • Painting, like poetry, is a space of endless  beginnings  using words or paint to build an image. It is also an experiment in "chance". Therefore, I work quickly, almost automatically to leave an opening for chance to appear. Oil paint allows me to experiment with color, with the energy or mood of each painting.   I am always inspired by 

  • Painting, like poetry, is a space of endless  beginnings  using words or paint to build an image. It is also an experiment in "chance". Therefore, I work quickly, almost automatically to leave an opening for chance to appear. Oil paint allows me to experiment with color, with the energy or mood of each painting.   I am always inspired by nature and the imbedded images of Detroit listening to my inner voice and all  life experiences to create art.

  • I began this journey with charcoal and pastels, admiring the way the materials blend and soften or enhance shadows. Drawing in the early 90's with the help of the late artist, Tony Williams.   During the next decade, I worked with paper, wood and words and also founded a literary journal, Dispatch Detroit.  As the new millennium appeared,

Drawing in the early 90's with the help of the late artist, Tony Williams.   During the next decade, I worked with paper, wood and words and also founded a literary journal, Dispatch Detroit.  As the new millennium appeared, oils took over my studio spaces and have been my passion ever  since.
